L: We were packed and ready to leave on the dot 9 o' clock, funny that, without even setting an alarm. We were saying that we are pretty proficient at packing and sorting by now. I even did 3 loads of washing and hung them up before we left.

So, after stopping to fuel-up and pump up the “air-shocks” which Steve has now fitted, we hit the N1. Of course, there was the usual weekend traffic and later a lot of trucks, which means that you slow down and have to watch for all the normal things like people pulling out in front of you or stopping without warning.

We later turned on to the R407 at Prince Albert Road and carried on until we got to the town of Prince Albert. I had seen mention of a campsite called Oudekloof, and remembered that it was 6 kms east of the town, but after seeing no sign board we decided to travel on the Oudtshoorn Road, which was lovely going up the Swartberg Pass.

We stopped several times to take photographs, the view is amazing and then we were lucky enough to find some Sugarbirds, male and female as well as a Malachite Sunbird, stunning!!

We also saw a bird that looked like an overgrown “bumble bee”, but didn't manage a pic. I think it must be a yellow bishop, but not sure.

S: It wasn't our intention to do Swartberg Pass, but after taking the turn-off while looking for Oudekloof we decided to just keep going and find a place to overnight near Oudtshoorn.
It was well worth the detour as we enjoy Swartberg Pass, it is an amazing feat of engineering so we took our time stopping often to take photos.

On the other side of the pass, just before the Cango Caves, we saw a signboard for De Hoek Resort, so we turned off to see what it was about. It looks impressive from the gate as you drive through it, but when we only had to pay R155 for the night for the two of us, we had our doubts........

Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised because it is a beautiful place with lots of grass, weeping willow trees and not too busy. We are now listening to some campers singing worship songs, which is lovely and tranquil as we braai.

We are having an early night after a fairly long day today.
